How does moon phase affect stargazing?

The full moon is roughly as bright as a streetlight — it washes out faint objects like the Milky Way and dim nebulae. A new moon (or a moon that sets before dark) gives the darkest sky. Planets, double stars, and open clusters are visible regardless of moon phase.

High particulate matter (smoke, dust, smog) scatters and absorbs light, reducing transparency. AQI above 100 noticeably dims stars. Wildfire smoke events can drop transparency to near zero even on cloudless nights.
