Question 1

What AQI level is safe to open windows?

Accepted Answer

AQI 0–50 (Good) is ideal — open freely. AQI 51–100 (Moderate) is generally fine for most people. AQI 101–150 (Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups) — keep windows closed if you have asthma, allergies, or heart/lung conditions. Above 150, keep windows closed for everyone.

Question 2

Is it better to open windows at night or in the morning?

Accepted Answer

Early morning (5–8am) is often the best time: temperatures are cooler, wind is calm, and AQI is typically at its daily low before traffic and industrial activity ramp up. At night, temperatures drop but AQI can worsen during wildfire season as cooler air traps smoke near ground level.

Question 3

Can I open windows during wildfire smoke?

Accepted Answer

No. When AQI exceeds 150 due to wildfire smoke, keep windows and doors closed. Run an air purifier with a HEPA filter if you have one. The fine particles in smoke (PM2.5) are harmful even in short exposures.

Question 4

Does opening windows cool my house faster than AC?

Accepted Answer

Yes, if the outside temperature is below your indoor temperature — and below about 75°F. A cross-breeze strategy (open windows on opposite sides of the house) can drop indoor temps 5–10°F in under an hour. Above 80°F outside, you're adding heat, not removing it.

Question 5

What humidity is too high for open windows?

Accepted Answer

Above 65–70% outdoor humidity, you're bringing in muggy air that can feel uncomfortable and encourage mold growth if your home is already humid. Below 55% is ideal; 55–65% is acceptable; above 70%, keep them closed in warm weather.

Question 6

Should I open windows when it's windy?

Accepted Answer

Gentle wind (under 12 mph) is actually beneficial — it moves air through the house quickly. Strong wind above 20–25 mph can blow in dust, pollen, and debris, and can create pressure imbalances that slam doors or damage window screens.

Question 7

Does pollen really come in through windows?

Accepted Answer

Yes — significantly. On high-pollen days, keeping windows closed and running AC on recirculate dramatically reduces indoor pollen. If you're opening windows, morning is better than midday since pollen peaks mid-morning to early afternoon on most days.
