Question 1

What temperature is best for grilling?

Accepted Answer

The sweet spot is 65–85°F — comfortable enough to stand outside without sweating through your apron or shivering. You can grill in colder weather; it just takes longer to heat the grill and you'll want a jacket.

Question 2

How windy is too windy for a grill?

Accepted Answer

Sustained winds above 20 mph make temperature control difficult and can blow out gas flames. Gusts over 25–30 mph are a safety concern for charcoal grills — embers can travel. Under 12 mph is ideal.

Question 3

Can I grill in the rain?

Accepted Answer

Light drizzle? Usually fine — your food stays dry under the lid. Steady rain makes it hard to keep charcoal lit. Heavy rain or thunderstorms: skip it. Lightning and a metal grill don't mix.

Question 4

Is it safe to grill under a covered patio in the rain?

Accepted Answer

Yes, with conditions: the cover must be at least 9 feet high and open on the sides for ventilation. Never grill in an enclosed space — carbon monoxide from charcoal and gas grills is deadly indoors.

Question 5

What's the best time of day to grill in summer?

Accepted Answer

Evening (6–8pm) is the sweet spot in summer. Temperatures drop, direct sun is off the patio, and wind typically calms down after the afternoon. Avoid midday when it's hottest and most humid.

Question 6

Does humidity affect grilling?

Accepted Answer

High humidity slows down the Maillard reaction slightly, meaning food takes a bit longer to get a good sear. It also makes standing outside less comfortable.

Question 7

Can you grill in cold weather?

Accepted Answer

Yes — but allow extra time. A cold grill takes 30–50% longer to reach temperature. Keep the lid closed as much as possible and use an instant-read thermometer rather than relying on timing.
