Question 1

How does bird migration forecasting work?

Accepted Answer

Most songbirds migrate at night, using stars and Earth's magnetic field for navigation. Radar can detect flocks as they take off at dusk and fly through the night. This forecast combines seasonal peak timing for your latitude with current weather conditions — calm nights near a migration peak see the most birds in flight.

Question 2

When is spring bird migration?

Accepted Answer

Spring migration runs roughly February through May across North America. Timing shifts with latitude: southern states see peak migration in late March to mid-April, while the northern US peaks in late April to late May. Shorebirds, warblers, thrushes, and tanagers are among the most dramatic spring migrants.

Question 3

When is fall bird migration?

Accepted Answer

Fall migration spans August through November, peaking September through October for most species. Fall migration is broader and more spread out than spring — birds aren't racing to claim breeding territory, so they travel more leisurely. Raptors like hawks and falcons are especially visible in fall at ridge sites and coastlines.

Question 4

How can I help migrating birds?

Accepted Answer

Turn off unnecessary outdoor and indoor lights visible from outside during peak migration nights — collisions with illuminated buildings are a leading cause of bird death. Keep cats indoors, especially during migration. If you have a yard, native plants provide critical stopover food and shelter. Maintaining a clean birdbath gives migrants fresh water after long overnight flights.

Question 5

What are 'lights out' programs?

Accepted Answer

Lights Out programs ask building owners and residents to turn off or dim exterior lights and close blinds on lit interiors during peak migration nights (roughly March–May and August–October). Disoriented by artificial light, birds circle buildings until exhaustion or crash into glass. Major cities including Chicago, New York, and Houston run formal Lights Out programs.

Question 6

What apps help identify migrating birds?

Accepted Answer

Merlin Bird ID (Cornell Lab, free) identifies birds by photo, sound, or description and works offline — ideal for dawn watches when birds are singing. eBird (also Cornell, free) lets you log sightings and see what others are finding locally. BirdWeather uses acoustic AI to identify birds by sound 24/7. For migration alerts, BirdCast provides live radar-based migration maps.

Question 7

Do I need binoculars to watch migration?

Accepted Answer

Binoculars dramatically improve the experience. For a starter pair, look for 8×42 or 10×42 magnification — the second number (42mm) is lens diameter, which affects low-light performance. Brands like Nikon Prostaff, Vortex Diamondback, and Celestron Nature DX offer solid optics for under $200. Night migration is best appreciated by sound — stand outside at dusk or dawn and listen for chip notes as birds pass overhead.

Question 8

When is the best time of day to watch migration?

Accepted Answer

Most songbirds migrate at night and land at dawn, so the first two hours after sunrise are the richest for seeing newly arrived migrants refueling at local parks and trees. Nocturnal flight calls can be heard from about an hour after sunset through the night. Hawk migration is diurnal — watch ridgelines and coastlines on clear days with northwest winds in fall for the best raptor flights.
